For such a simple color scheme the finishing touches on this piece took an extraordinary amount of time 🙄
After initial sculpting this piece sat on the wall unfinished for years –
And as happy as I was with the form itself- and it looked quite beautiful hanging on the wall- like some ghostly, pale gray shell- I decided it was time to stop procrastinating and finally bring it to life with a skin of paint.
First I applied a dark gray to the under/inside. Next came an even coating of Titanium White to the outer surfaces.
Then I scumbled a glaze of Carbon Black paint over the spikes and raised areas-
The black really brought out the strange little forest of twisted up paper ephemera spiking our of it’s “back”.
Then I glazed over the black paint with some Raw Umber to warm it up and cleaned up the areas around the spikes with some additional Titanium White.
Now to let the paint cure for a bit and then it will be ready for some protective varnish- and a proper photo shoot (ie not on the carpet of my studio 🙂)
