Three increasingly abstract studies of snowbound forests painted from memory-
“Winter Forest after a Snowstorm” -original painting by MJ Seal. Acrylic on board, 14″ x 10 1/2″. C. 2018.
This first study was quick and the most impressionistic. I used just 2 shades of gray (including the purplish brown ground) and pure titanium white.
The second piece looks photorealistic from even a slight distance but up close it is actually very abstract. The edges are crisp and clearly delineated. The tonal values are made up of 6 shades of warm gray. The softness of the grays making up the “background” trees gives the impression of falling snow.
“Winter Forest in a Snowstorm” – Original painting by MJ Seal. Acrylic on board, 10″ x 14 3/4″. C. 2018
This third piece is the most abstract- with the contrast between the white and dark grays creating the illusion of forms.
